Yesterday morning, I baked Christmas cookies, using my old mixing bowls.?
These 4 nesting mixing bowls are yellow, green, red, and blue (large to small) and my Grandmother had a set. My mom does, my sister does and my aunt does. I feel like I’m almost in the kitchen with all these family members whenever I use them. Does anyone else have a special kitchen tool that brings back family memories?
Actually, I have decorated my kitchen with antique cooking utensils and on shelves above my windows and doors, are many old kitchen items. I have old coffee pots, a teapot, a flour sifter, an antique toaster, and many more things. Among them are my grandmother’s canning jars and her jar lifter. I use many of the jars as cannisters and have a display of 3 different sizes on an old Hoosier cabinet with candles in it. Every time I light them, I think of my Grandmother. I have my husband’s grandmother’s dough cutter and her rolling pin hanging on the wall. I just take the rolling pin out of it’s special rack and clean it off to use it. My grandmother’s colander is also on the wall. On special occasions, I will use my grandmother’s handmade crocheted tablecloth on the table. So I not only use these items to decorate, but I actually use the items as I cook as well. I feel surrounded by all of them whenever I use these things and they are all precious to me.
One of my favorite items that I have on display, but don’t use, is a carnival glass fluted bowl. My mother (now 76) used to clean house for an elderly lady when she was a teenager. Whenever she dusted, the woman would tell her to be very careful when she dusted the bowl, because it was her mothers, and it was valuable and special to her. Before she died, she gave the bowl to my mother, who gave it to me a few years ago. Because of it’s history, I don’t actually use it as I’m afraid I’ll break it.
A few friends of mine have even passed their family ‘kitchen treasures’ to me because they knew I would give them a good home.
People frequently comment on how “homey” my kitchen is. I know it’s because I have generations of women from my life represented in it.
